Summary
Tasked with redesigning Foobar’s outdated website and creating complementary graphics, I benchmarked competitors, focusing on design and visual appeal. While maintaining the existing site architecture at the client’s request, I drew inspiration from the old design for a simple, minimal facelift. A component kit and Figma variables streamlined the design process and design-to-development pipeline. Close collaboration with the developer facilitated a smooth handover. Regular design reviews with the developer, combined with my coding knowledge, ensured solutions aligned with the client’s tech stack. Accessibility tools, benchmarking, and UX/UI best practices validated design decisions, leading to iterative improvements based on client feedback. The project delivered a refreshed website design and updated graphics. While the technical implementation neared completion, the new version hadn’t yet been deployed. This first freelance experience taught me valuable lessons about managing project scope and further developed my Figma variables skills.
I was tasked to redesign a website that had stayed pretty much the same throughout the client company Foobar’s existence and create graphics that would fit the more modern redesigned look.
I started the process by benchmarking competitors to find possible shortcomings compared to the client’s website in terms of design and graphics. The client provided the information and wanted the architecture to remain pretty similar to their old one so I had to make do with what they had.
In my designs I drew inspiration from the old ones. I did this because my goal was keep the design simple and minimal and to do more of a facelift rather a total overhaul. I created a simple component kit and used Figma’s new variables to speed up my design process and to help with the design to development pipeline.
The technical implementation was handled by a separate developer. We had seamless co-operation trough-out the process which enabled an easy handover when the design were finalized.
To ensure best possible results I went through the designs with the developer regularly. My understanding of coding and web development helped majorly with creating solutions that matched what could be done with the client’s tech stack.
I tested the designs through out the process multiple times with accessibility tools and used benchmarking findings as well as UX/UI best practices to validate my design decisions. Iterations of the designs were made based on the findings and went through a few comment rounds with the client.
I designed the new refreshed website and created graphics that complemented the more modern refreshed look. Technical implementation seemed to be near completion, but it looks like the new version has not been pushed to the live website by development.
This was my first freelance job and I absolutely learned a lot about the ways I work in when comes to doing freelance work with client’s. For example I learned a lot more about how to keep a project scope right on target when you the person managing absolutely everything. I also learned a lot about Figma’s new variables.
